Bay Point Invitational Kicks Off with Soldier Salute
For the Second Year, Bay Point Partners with Freedom Alliance to Salute the Brave Men and Women who Wear our Nation’s Uniform.
July 15, 2009
The Bay Point Invitational Billfish Tournament kicked off Wednesday with a special trip for two combat-wounded U.S. service members for the second annual Soldier Salute. U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Deane Messex and Sergeant Philip Gonzales were joined by local Bay Point resident and retired Army officer Dean Resch for a day of fishing in the Gulf on the 74’ Viking Game On courtesy of Galati Yacht Sales and the Washington, DC based Freedom Alliance.
The highlight of the fishing trip was when SSG Messex landed a 62.9-pound cobia! In the evening, the soldiers and their families enjoyed dining on their catch but the best part for the soldiers was knowing that their service and sacrifice is appreciated by grateful Americans.
Competing yachts arrived at Bay Point Marina throughout the day with crews fueling, making last minute preparations and registering for the event under sunny skies. The Crew Cookout, hosted by Ample Energy, started on sponsor row at 7pm, complete with live entertainment by Reed Waddle and Bar-B-Q courtesy of Hottie Hawgs. A booth complete with the latest version of Guitar Hero and a giant screen TV provided plenty opportunities for fun and games.
Registration continues today with the remainder of the Invitational Fleet and new 40/40 Shootout Division arriving at Bay Point Marina in time for the Captain's Meeting this evening at 5:30pm and traditional Kick-Off Party held at the Bay Point Marriott. The Sponsor Village opens Thursday afternoon with food booths, children’s play area, retail shopping, tournament gifts, jewelry and the Artist Gallery open for business.
Live entertainment starts at 5:30pm on the Clear Channel Entertainment Stage. Opening Ceremonies begin at 8pm where soldiers, sailors, airmen, Guardsmen and Marines will each be recognized for their contribution to America’s freedom. The Boat Parade starts at 9:30pm, then it's back to the Sponsor Village to party with Nashville singer-songwriter Joanna Smith! |
